Description
Colleges and Universities often talk about their commitment totheir community, but many overlook the important role thatstudents can play in helping with the prevention, preparedness, response and recovery efforts for emergencies and disasters notonly on their own campus but in their community. Highereducation institutions do not consider the impact that they canmake in community safety simply by encouraging the inclusion ofemergency and disaster related information through their student’stenure. The formation of an active campus community EmergencyResponse Team (CERT) can go a long way in not only helpingwith disaster management but also in producing graduates that arebetter equipped to help make their families, organizations andcommunities more resilient to emergencies and disasters. This casestudy examined the steps that one HBCU university took to createa functioning campus CERT with the hope of helping othercampuses starting similar programs.
